Tsochatzopoulos refuses to give evidence in arms procurement trial

Former Defense Minister Akis Tsochatzopoulos refused to give evidence on Monday in his money laundering trial.

The former PASOK official said he was protesting the court’s decision not to give him more time to prepare his defense against charges he accepted bribes for arms contracts when in office.

Last week, judges rejected his request that he be given until August 26 to study almost 31,000 pages of witness statements and other evidence collected during the trial.

Tsochatzopoulos complained that he would not receive a fair trial if he was not allowed more time to consult with his lawyers and that other defendants would have more time to prepare as he will be the first of 19 suspects to be questioned in court.
