PM to meet with Greek-American investors in NY

Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras is due to meet with the heads of big Greek-American investment firms in New York as part of a three-day US visit that includes a key meeting with President Barack Obama in Washington DC on Thursday.

Samaras will also be meeting with US Secretary of State John Kerry to discuss regional developments in the Middle East and North Africa, among other issues, ahead of his meeting with Obama in Washington.

The Greek premier will be returning to New York later on Thursday, where he is expected to sit down with New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Greek Orthodox Archbishop Demetrios, prominent members of the Greek diaspora and United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon before returning to Greece.

A visit to the 9/11 Memorial and the New York Times editorial board are also on the itinerary of the prime minister's trip.

Athens sees the trip as an opportunity to gain Washington’s support for Greece’s efforts to emerge from its economic crisis and to boost the country’s geopolitical significance following the selection of the Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP), which is to cross through Greece, for the delivery of Azeri gas to Western Europe.

Greek and US officials are said to be keen to discuss prospects in the energy sector, as well as the potential for Greece to act as an anchor of stability in a volatile region.
