Power station fire causes Santorini blackout

A fire that broke out at a power station on Santorini, a popular tourist destination which has reportedly drawn a record number of tourists this year, left the southern Aegean island without electricity for several hours though power was gradually being restored on Tuesday night.

The fire started at a power station in Monolithos, some 9 kilometers southeast of Fira, at around noon and was doused before it could cause major damage or injuries. By nightfall, technicians had restored electricity to much of the island. Meanwhile a navy vessel and a passenger ferry were dispatched to carry two power generators to the island for use until the power station is fully operational.

During the blackout, Santorini Mayor Anastasios-Nikolaos Zorzos sent musicians and singers into the streets to entertain tourists. “It was a chance for visitors to see Santorini under the stars,” he said.
