As violent protests continued in Egypt, Greece’s Foreign Ministry on Friday sought to allay concern about the fate of the Greek community in the Arab republic.

“I have been assured that Greeks are not facing any problem at this time,” Deputy Foreign Minister Akis Gerontopoulos said from Thessaloniki, adding however that authorities were monitoring the situation.

“I want to believe that Christian populations will not suffer persecution or any possible repercussions of this domestic dispute,” he said.

Protests by supporters of ousted Islamist President Mohamed Morsi grew increasingly violent across Egypt yesterday, two days after an assault by security forces on protesters left hundreds dead.
