Eighty-one undocumented immigrants were picked up by the Hellenic Coast Guard from different beaches on the eastern Aegean island of Chios on Saturday, according to reports.
Several were reportedly trapped in coves that were inaccessible by land and were rescued with the help of the fire brigade and a Super Puma helicopter.
There were no reports of fatalities or injuries.
There was no information about the nationality of the immigrants or how they got there, but a number of wrecked rubber dinghies have allegedly been spotted off the island’s coast.
The immigrants were taken to hospital for checkups.
