Georgian Interpol suspect nabbed on Zakynthos, beaten in Korydallos

A Georgian man wanted by Interpol in connection with the high-profile murder of a banker in his homeland in 2006 was in the hospital of Attica’s Korydallos Prison on Thursday after being beaten up by compatriots following his arrest on the Ionian island of Zakynthos, where he appears to have been vacationing.

The suspect, who had served in his country’s Interior Ministry before being put in charge of its prison system, is alleged to have covered for ministry officials who have been implicated in the murder of Sandro Girgvliani of United Georgian Bank.

He was wanted for abuse of power, and faces eight years in prison if convicted in his country, but has evaded arrest for years. He was finally caught by Greek police at Zakynthos Airport with his wife and four children and was transferred to Korydallos, where authorities put him in a cell with fellow Georgians who recognized him and beat him up.
