Bill to stop politicians from claiming two pensions

Ministers, MPs and mayors no longer have the right to claim two pensions, according to a legislative amendment submitted in Parliament on Friday.

The reform foresees the abolition of a provision passed in 2010, the year that Greece signed its first foreign rescue deal, allowing cabinet members, MPs and elected local authority officials to either keep paying into their professional pension or have the money that they have paid into that fund count toward their second pension.

Since 2010, politicians have seen their salaries and pensions cut, along with those of other civil servants, and have been forced to give up other perks such as courtesy cars.
