An 87-year-old woman who was discovered by police dead in her apartment in Ano Poli in Thessaloniki on Thursday afternoon may have been the victim of a violent robbery, the state-run Athens-Macedonia New Agency said on Friday.
Police found the body after being alerted by the woman's nephew who said he had not heard from her in several days.
The elderly woman was found to have sustained bruises and lacerations to her face and hands, suggesting that she was trying to ward off multiple blows against her.
Even though the front door to the apartment had not been forced open, the home was in disarray and investigators believe that 600 euros and a ring had been removed from the property.
A coroner is expected to confirm the exact cause of the 87-year-old woman's death.
