Corinth-Sparta road revamp held up by ancient dig

The completion of works on the highway linking Corinth with Sparta in the Peloponnese is dependent on archaeological excavations that are being conducted in parallel though the project is on track to be completed by the end of next year, Kathimerini understands.

Works are under way on two sections of the highway – a 46-kilometer section between Lefktro and Sparta and an 11 km section on the Kalamata ring road. Meanwhile a court of arbitration is to rule on an appeal by Moreas, the consortium which is managing the project, for an additional 50.5 million euros in state funding.

The state has paid 6.7 million euros since 2010 to cover the cost of archaeological excavations.
