In a rare piece of good news accompanying the start of the academic year, 22 new schools are due to open next week in different parts of the country.

The new buildings are to accommodate kindergartens, primary schools and secondary schools, depending on the needs in the areas, while another 19 new schools are due to open by the end of October, Kathimerini understands.

A further 40 schools – most of them found to have been constructed using asbestos, which can cause serious illnesses – have been “upgraded” since 2010.
