Rise in power disconnections

Rise in power disconnections

More than 500,000 Greeks had their electricity cut off or reconnected last year, a rise in excess of 100 percent compared to pre-crisis levels.

According to the Regulatory Authority for Energy (RAE), a total of 513,944 applications were made for power to be cut or reconnected in 2012.

This represented an 133 percent rise on the pre-crisis figure of 220,321 in 2008.

RAE did not explain what exactly had prompted this rise.

Separately, figures for the number of customers asking to have their electricity connected after it was cut off due to unpaid bills rose to 190,541 last year, which was almost 50 percent higher than in 2009.
