Deputy Justice Minister Haralambos Athanasiou met with European Commissioner for Justice Viviane Reding on Friday to discuss legal ways of strengthening the security of European citizens’ personal data.

The meeting, which was held in light of Greece’s turn at the helm of the European Union’s six-month rotating presidency starting January 1, was attended by Lithuanian Justice Minister Juozas Bernatonis and the chair of the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs of the European Parliament, Juan Fernando Lopez Aguilar.

The European Commission has also shown interest in the subject, after the press revealed that the United States National Security Agency (NSA) had spied on EU diplomatic representations in Washington, New York and Brussels. Reding has called for EU data protection reform following the NSA Prism scandal.
