The Public Order Ministry is to launch tenders soon for the management of six temporary detention centers for undocumented immigrants by private security firms, Kathimerini has learned.

The six centers include one in Drama, northern Greece, and one in Corinth, west of Athens, but not the Amygdaleza facility, northwest of Athens, which is on premises that belong to the Greek Police (ELAS).

Commenting on the Corinth facility on Monday, Minister Nikos Dendias said it would soon acquire “a permanent force and will not take up the time of police officers.” Police and local authority officials have complained that the operation of the center has burdened the local force, often leaving them unable to meet their day-to-day duties.
