NATO ’pylon of stability,’ Samaras says after talks with Rasmussen in Athens

NATO is a «pylon of stability» in an international environment that is uncertain and in flux, Prime Minister Antonis Samaras said on Friday after talks in Athens with the alliance's Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen.

Samaras noted that Greece deemed the United Nations to have the primary role in maintaining global security and respect for international law. But he said the role played by NATO was complementary to that of the UN and very substantial, noting that the alliance has demonstrated its ability to respond efficiently to the threats posed by terrorism and piracy.

"Greece is one of the oldest members of NATO and will continue, in spite of fiscal pressures, to actively participate in the alliance,» Samaras said.

Rasmussen also referred to Greece's historic role in the alliance and expressed thanks for the country's continued support despite the economic constraints imposed by its debt problems.
