Students at Athens University and the National Technical University of Athens look set to lose their winter semester following Wednesday’s decision by administrative staff at the former to extend ongoing strike action into a ninth week, with employees at the latter institution set to make the same decision on Thursday.

If a compromise is not reached by Monday, when staff are to enter their ninth week of action in protest at the government’s civil service overhaul, students will not have completed adequate lessons for the semester.

Meanwhile Athens prosecutor Panayiota Fakou ordered a probe into reports that staff at both universities have been receiving full pay despite being on strike for the past two months.
