The Greek Parliament is to reduce the amount of energy it uses by almost 40 percent as part of a European Union-funded program to make public buildings more environmentally-friendly.

It was announced on Thursday that 2.5 million euros would be spent on improving the 27,023-square meter building’s energy efficiency, with the bulk of the money going toward a natural gas-powered central heating system.

“Our aim is for all public buildings to become more energy efficient so we can promote sustainable development and combat climate change, step by step,” said Deputy Environment Minister Stavros Kalafatis.
