Health minister sticks to his position; protests continue

Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis met with cries of “economic murderer” when he attended an event organized by the Athens Medical Association on Saturday.

Speaking to the audience, Georgiadis stuck by his comments earlier in the week that some of the 6,000 doctors working for the country’s main healthcare provider, EOPYY, would lose their jobs as part of a shake-up of Greece’s primary health services.

The Health Ministry is in the process of assessing what needs the primary healthcare sector has and whether any surplus doctors could be posted to public hospitals.

The European Union Task Force for Greece has suggested that about 2,250 doctors working at EOPYY could be moved to state hospitals.
