Court rules Athens University, NTUA employee strike illegal, not abusive

An Athens Court of First Instance ruled on Wednesday that a strike by the administrative staff at Athens University and National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) was illegal but not abusive.

Following the court’s decision, early reports suggested that university employees were considering calling a new strike.

Staff at Athens University and the National Technical University of Athens are protesting their inclusion in the government’s labor mobility scheme that will see some of them transferred to other services and others losing their jobs.

University staff entered their 11th week of strike action on Monday following their refusal to respond to calls from the Education Ministry for them to return to work in order for some 55,000 students not to miss the first semester of the academic year.

Employees argue that transfers and dismissals would undermine both the daily operations of the universities as well as the overall level of education.

The government was expected to react to the ruling on Wednesday.
