Venizelos says growth, illegal migration crackdown priorities of EU presidency

Talks between Foreign Minister Evangelos Venizelos and British Foreign Secretary William Hague in London focused on what Greece's priorities will be when the country assumes the European Union's rotating presidency on January 1 as well as issues of bilateral concern including Cyprus, the problem of illegal immigration and the scourge of unemployment.

"The first priority, not only for Greece, but for every European country and society, is growth, job creation, the protection of the social dimension, the new rules of economic governance, the banking union, the monitoring of the European borders, the problem of illegal immigration," Venizelos said in a joint appearance before reporters in London following his talks with Hague on Thursday.

Venizelos told the Athens-Macedonia News Agency that the two men also discussed Greece's efforts to overcome its economic crisis as well as the Cyprus problem as well as developments in Syria, Egypt, Iran and Libya.
