Six anarchists go on trial for armed bank robberies

The trial of six young Greeks arrested for a double armed bank robbery in Velvento, northern Greece, in February began Friday with five of the suspects refusing to recognize the court.

Yiannis Michailidis, Nikos Romanos, Foivos Harisis Poulos, Andreas Bourzoukos and Anargyros Dalios appeared before three criminal appeals court judges in a specially designed courtroom at Korydallos Prison. A sixth suspect, Dimitris Politis, refused to appear and gave power of attorney to his lawyer.

The six are also accused of being members of the Conspiracy of Cells of Fire urban guerrilla group. They deny the charge but have declared that they are anarchists.

The defendants’ lawyers asked for the trial to be postponed but the judges rejected the request, deciding instead to adjourn the hearing until December 12.
