Argos mayor appeals for help after flash flooding causes damage, death

The mayor of Argos, which suffered extensive flooding on Sunday, has declared a state of emergency in the Peloponnesian town as authorities tried to restore the damage done by the heavy rain.

A 55-year-old woman, thought to be Serbian, drowned during the night when here basement apartment flooded. Her death comes after three people drowned on Rhodes just over a week ago during a flash flood.

Argos Mayor Dimitris Kambosos said that extensive damage had been caused throughout the Argos-Mycenae Municipality. TV footage showed that some roads had been destroyed and cars had washed up in the front yards of homes.

Kambosos called on the central government to provide assistance. “This paralyzed state cannot continue to be indifference,” he said. “Argos has been hit mercilessly. The state has to help.”

Interior Minister Yiannis Michelakis was due to travel to Argos with regional officials to assess the damage caused by Sunday’s storm.
