Parliament to begin debating 2014 budget

Greek lawmakers are scheduled to begin debating the draft budget for 2014 on Tuesday afternoon, with the final vote scheduled for midnight on Saturday following an address by Prime Minister Antonis Samaras in which he is expected to defend several controversial proposals that need to be settled before Athens can come to deal with its international creditors.

The debate in Parliament's plenary session is scheduled to commence at 6 p.m. on Tuesday. The five-day discussion is expected to focus on some of thornier measures in the budget, including the lifting of a ban on home foreclosures, ahead of a key Eurogroup summit on December 9.

Meanwhile, Greece’s main private sector union, GSEE, plans to hold a rally in Syntagma Square on Saturday to coincide with the voting of the budget.

GSEE has called on its members to gather in front of Parliament from 6 p.m.
