Hundreds to be hired to understaffed prisons, minister says

Administrative Reform Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakos on Friday approved the recruitment of between 800 and 1,000 Justice Ministry employees next year in a bid to boost the country's understaffed prisons.

Mitsotakis added that 758 of those positions would be filled by former members of the capital's now defunct municipal police force who have been put into a civil service mobility scheme. The troika-imposed plan foresees forced transfers and layoffs as part of a broader effort to cut waste in the Greek civil service.

In a related development, the union representing local authority workers, known by its acronym POE-OTA, is to appeal to the Council of State, the country's highest administrative court, against the mobility scheme.
