Public transport reaps rewards of more ticket inspections

An increase in the number of ticket inspectors and the better organization of checks for fare dodgers have helped Athens’s public transport companies boost their revenues over the last few months.

OSY, the public firm responsible for buses and trolley buses, saw the number of people caught without tickets increase from 6,076 in September to 11,195 in October. The total amount of penalties issued to those fare dodgers shot up from 318,432 euros to 572,676 during the period. By November 19, 8,058 passengers had been fined a total of 405,000 euros.

STASY, which manages the metro, electric railway and tram, added 70 inspectors and widened inspections throughout the network. As a result, the penalties issued during the first nine months of this year came to 3.2 million euros, which was 22.94 percent higher than during the same period last year.
