Family of Greek woman agree to organ donation, saving six lives

The organs of a 45-year-old woman who died in the intensive-care unit of the Alexandroupoli General Hospital in northern Greece on December 18 have helped save six lives in Greece and Italy, the hospital’s director said on Friday.

The woman’s family gave the hospital the green light to donate her organs after she was pronounced brain dead, with her heart, kidneys, liver and lungs going to four Greeks and two Italians.

“The end of one person’s life meant a cure and hope for six of our fellow human beings,” the hospital’s director, Dimitris Lazopoulos, said.
