A memorial rally organized by an anti-fascist group on Friday at the spot where rapper Pavlos Fyssas was stabbed to death by a self-confessed member of neofascist Golden Dawn in September was attended by the parents of a Pakistani man murdered in central Athens a year ago.

The parents of 27-year-old Luqman Shahzad joined anti-fascist protesters in the Piraeus suburb of Keratsini, where Fyssas was killed on September 18. Their own son was stabbed to death just over a year ago when he was attacked by two men who are currently on trial and are suspected of having ties to Golden Dawn.

The Pakistani couple had expressed their desire to meet with Fyssas’s parents who, however, did not attend Friday’s event.

“No mother, no father, should ever experience the pain we felt when we heard that our child had been stabbed while going to work to make money to help us,” Shahzad’s parents said in a statement.
