A man accused of brutally assaulting a teenager on the island of Paros in the summer of 2012 on Tuesday pleaded guilty to charges of attempted manslaughter and assault on the opening day of his trial in Syros, the administrative capital of the Cycladic islands.

Ahmed Waqas, a Pakistani national who was aged 21 at the time of the attack in July 2012 and was working as a gardener at a local hotel, admitted to the court that he tried to steal the 15-year-old girl’s cell phone while she was sitting on a beach during a family holiday on the popular island. He said that after he assaulted her he left her behind of pile of rocks on the beach, where she was subsequently found by her mother.

“I accept all the charges,” Waqas was quoted by Skai as saying. “I ask her family to forgive me for what I have done.”

The teenager suffered extensive head injuries during the attack and has undergone lengthy treatment in the United States after being in a coma for several months. She was recently brought back to Greece to continue rehabilitation therapy.

Her mother was at the court on Tuesday, where she offered testimony about the state in which she found her daughter after the assault. She also admitted to being disheartened by her daughter’s slow progress in recovering.
