Police officers in Evros, northeastern Greece, on Sunday exchanged fire with a suspected migrant trafficker when the latter refused to stop at a road check, leading his vehicle, carrying 12 undocumented immigrants (eight Iraqis and four Somalians) to collide with three police cars.

After the exchange of fire with police the suspect abandoned the vehicle, which had failed to restart, and fled the scene.

While the suspect remained at large on Monday, three of his alleged accomplices, a 51-year-old Greek and two Armenians, aged 58 and 51, were arrested.

Police believe the trafficking ring had been operating for the last two months.
