A fire that broke out shortly after 7 a.m. on Friday at the central court house of the southeastern Aegean island of Rhodes has been attributed to arson, according to local media outlet Rodiaki.

Investigators called to the scene discovered an unsigned note that expressed animosity toward the judicial system, judges and prosecutors in vitriolic terms. They are gathering evidence and taking eye-witness testimony in the hopes of identifying the perpetrator.

The fire destroyed part of the judges’ bench and a valuable religious painting.
