Giorgos Kaminis and Yiannis Boutaris retained the mayorships of Athens and Thessaloniki in the second round of local elections on Sunday but there were changes in key Greek cities.

Patra, Greece’s third largest city, was won by Communist Party candidate Costas Peletidis. In Iraklio, Crete, independent hopeful Vassilis Lambrinos beat PASOK-backed incumbent Yiannis Kourakis.

Another independent, Apostolos Kalogiannis, took control of Larissa. He was supported by SYRIZA and the Ecologist Greens. In Volos, soccer club president Achilleas Beos came out on top even though he faces match-fixing charges.

Piraeus was won by another soccer official, Olympiakos executive Yiannis Moralis, who defeated New Demcoracy’s incumbent Vassilis Michaloliakos. New Democracy also lost out in the more affluent northern suburbs of Athens, such as Kifissia, Halandri, Vrilissia and Aghia Paraskevi.

There was also a notable victory in the municipality of Andravida-Kyllini in the Peloponnese, where Nabil Morad, a Syrian doctor who has lived in Greece for 25 years, was elected. His win takes on greater significance given that the municipality includes Nea Manolada, the village where migrants working as strawberry pickers have suffered abuse in the past.
