Right-wing, anti-bailout party Independent Greeks saw its parliamentary group shrink to 14 on Thursday after MP Vassilis Kapernaros said he would stand as an independent, citing a lack of support from the party for his candidacy as Athens mayor.

Announcing his decision to his fellow MPs, Kapernaros said his dignity did not allow him to remain in the party and, according to sources, he hinted that his candidacy had been undermined.

In comments later in the day, Kapernaros said his resignation was also prompted by a lack of self-criticism by the party’s leadership, an apparent reference to the poor showing by Independent Greeks in last week’s European Parliament elections when it only scraped 3.4 percent of the vote.
