Navy admiral and junta dissenter dies at age 82

Admiral Leonidas Vassilikopoulos, who was head of the Hellenic Navy in the 1980s and in charge of the National Intelligence Service (EYP) in the 1990s, died on Friday at the age of 82.

Vassilikopoulos was part of a group that resisted the 1967-74 military junta and was jailed and tortured as a result. He later became a close associate of late Prime Minister and PASOK leader Andreas Papandreou.

Vassilikopoulos was navy chief from 1986 to 1989 and headed EYP from 1993 to 1996.
