The leaders of Cyprus’s enstranged Greek- and Turkish-Cypriot communities yesterday agreed to wrap up the current phase of reunification talks as soon as possible, the United Nations said in a statement.

However, diplomatic sources told Kathimerini the meeting between President Nicos Anastasiades and Dervis Eroglu in Nicosia was tense as the leader of the Turkish-occupied community in northern Cyprus insisted on moving into the third stage of “give and take” bargaining. The demand was reportedly turned down by Anastasiades. Eroglu reportedly also revived a proposal for a rotating president, which was again rejected by Greek-Cypriot negotiators.
