The government is considering three main candidates to be Greece’s representative on the European Commission, Kathimerini understands.

They are Greece’s current envoy, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Commissioner Maria Damanaki (photo), Former Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyannis and New Democracy MP Costis Hatzidakis, who was replaced as development minister in last week’s reshuffle.

Hatzidakis was elected as an MP in 1994, 1999 and 2004.

Sources did not rule out the possibility of the nominee not coming from this trio, though.

Prime Minister Antonis Samaras’s final decision is expected toward the end of the summer.
