The testimony of Spyros Travlos, a former senior Defense Ministry official, in connection to a scandal which erupted over German submarine purchases, has been postponed for July 11 after he asked for more time to prepare his defense.

Travlos faces criminal charges for breach of faith during his tenure as general secretary of procurements in 2003 that resulted in losses of some 60 million euros for the state coffers.

Travlos, who served while veteran Socialist Yiannos Papantoniou was in charge of the ministry, is said to have overseen the signing of millions of euros’ worth of offsetting measures in the submarine deals.

Yiannis Beltsios, an associate of former Defense Minister Akis Tsochatzopoulos, and Sotiris Emmanouil, the former chairman of Hellenic Shipyards at Skaramangas, are in pretrial detention over accusations of involvement in an extensive corruption scandal connected to the purchase of four German submarines for the Greek navy in the last decade.
