A 37-year-old woman was being treated for post-natal complications at Thessaloniki’s Ippokrateio Hospital on Friday under police guard after she allegedly threw her dead baby in a garbage dumpster.
According to sources, the woman went to the hospital on Thursday night in extreme pain and a medical examination indicated that she had given birth very recently.
On questioning the woman allegedly revealed that she had given birth alone at home on July 12, had put the infant in a cupboard for two days and, on its death, had disposed of it in a trash dumpster. The woman told police she had hidden her pregnancy from her husband.
Her ethnic origin remained unclear with some reports indicating that she is Greek and others that she is a foreign national.
