Supreme Court deputy prosecutor says ex-finance chief should be tried over ‘Lagarde list’

Former Finance Minister Giorgos Papaconstantinou should stand trial for allegedly tampering with the Lagarde list of depositors, Supreme Court deputy prosecutor Vassilis Pliotas recommended to the judicial council that will decide the politician’s fate.

Pliotas said that Papaconstantinou should be tried for two felonies – breach of faith and doctoring an official document – and one misdemeanor – breach of duty. He also recommended that his cousin, Eleni Papaconstantinou, and her husband Symeon Sikiaridis, also stand trial along with Andreas Rossonis, husband of Marina Papaconstantinou, another cousin of the ex-minister.

Papaconstantinou is alleged to have deleted his relatives’ details from the list of more than 2,000 Greeks with deposits at the HSBC branch in Geneva. He denies the charges. He faced a special magistrate last month and was released after posting 30,000 euros bail.
