Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Evangelos Venizelos on Wednesday hailed the announcement of a ceasefire between Israel and the Palestinians brokered in Cairo, Egypt, late on Tuesday following a seven-week conflict.

In a statement released on Wednesday, Venizelos noted that “Greece welcomes the agreement reached on the initiation of a permanent ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and expresses the hope that this will be a long-term ceasefire that creates conditions allowing for the speedy reconstruction of Gaza, the entry of humanitarian aid, and the reopening of the peace process.”

The Greek foreign minister also highlighted the role of Egyptian diplomacy in achieving the ceasefire.

“The Greek government reiterates its readiness to treat wounded, particularly children, and to contribute in any possible way to the reconstruction of Gaza, following the recent announcement of the provision of €500,000, through the UNRWA, to cover fgood needs and repairs to the water supply network,” the statement read.
