One day after his swearing-in ceremony was marred by protests against budget cuts and the expulsion of thousands of so-called eternal students, the new rector at the University of Athens, Theodoros Fortsakis, on Tuesday announced measures designed to curb illegal behavior inside the campus.

The aim, he said, was to contain “drug dealing, illegal trade, acts of vandalism [and] thefts” currently taking place on university grounds.

Under the new measures, students would be requested to show their ID cards upon entering problem-hit sections, Fortsakis said.

“I will not call the police, but I will make sure the university operates smoothly,” he told Ta Nea daily.
