Dozens of arrests at march to mark anniversary of Fyssas murder

A total of 64 people were arrested on Thursday evening during a march in southwestern Athens to mark the one-year anniversary of the murder of rapper Pavlos Fyssas by a Golden Dawn member.

Between 5,000 and 10,000 people are estimated to have taken part in the largely peaceful march. Trouble broke out when a small group clashed with police. Molotov cocktails were thrown by protesters and police responded with tear gas and stun grenades.

A statue of Fyssas was unveiled at the spot in the Keratsini neighborhood where he was stabbed to death by Giorgos Roupakias, who is in custody awaiting trial.

“We are here to stop fascism and whatever gives rise to it,” said the rapper’s father, Panayiotis Fyssas.

The father of Shehzad Luqman, a Pakistani migrant murdered by Golden Dawn members, also visited the memorial on Thursday.
