Police in Aegaleo, western Athens, were on Wednesday investigating the circumstances of a grisly murder after discovering the dismembered, partially charred body of a man in a garbage dumpster on a street corner.

Neighbors alerted the fire service when they saw the dumpster on fire at around 2.30 a.m. After extinguishing the blaze, firefighters discovered the body of an unidentified man in two halves, the top half inside the bin and the bottom half on the ground nearby.

The arms had been severed at the wrists in an apparent attempt by the perpetrators to stop police from identifying the victim by using his fingerprints.
