Transfers irk universities

The heads of rural universities are examining the details of a law passed earlier this year allowing students to freely apply for transfers to other institutions due to fears of a mass exodus as the academic year begins.

Sources told Kathimerini that up to 80 percent of freshmen at some university departments have asked for permission to move to city-based institutions.

This has prompted rectors to ask their legal departments to examine the details of the transfer law, which was voted through Parliament in May.

There is concern that the large amount of transfers will cause overcrowding at some universities, while leaving others bereft of students.
