Police release identity of alleged Maziotis accomplice

Police identified on Friday the 31-year-old man arrested in Athens this week who is suspected of being an accomplice of jailed Revolutionary Struggle leader Nikos Maziotis.

Antonis Stambopoulos, born February 21, 1983, was arrested as he was about to enter a garage in the Athenian suburb of Vyronas. He has no prior police record but allegedly refused to cooperate with investigators during questioning and resisted demands to have his fingerprints taken.

Officers were tipped off to the location of the garage after the owner complained he hadn’t received any rent since July 16, the day Maziotis was arrested after a shootout with police in central Athens. The terrorist’s fingerprint was allegedly found on the lease, prompting authorities to put the property under surveillance.

A search of the garage allegedly revealed evidence of a connection to Maziotis and his wife, Panagiota Roupa, who is still at large.

When Stambopoulos was arrested he held a notebook containing the names and addresses of suspected terrorism targets, officers said.
