Four killed in northern Greece highway pileup; truck driver arrested

Four people were killed and at least 20 injured when a truck plowed into some 30 vehicles that were backed up in traffic on the Thessaloniki-bound lane of Egnatia Highway in northern Greece.

The state-run Athens-Macedonia News Agency said that initial reports suggested that the truck was traveling from Veria when it careened at high speed into dozens of vehicles on the highway at around 10.30 a.m., causing at least 30 cars to crash into each other. At least one of the vehicles burst into flames.

The driver of the truck allegedly fled the scene of the accident and was arrested a few hours later by police, who found him hiding in a nearby field. He has been identified as a Romanian national and is being held for questioning.

Four people were confirmed dead from the pileup and dozens have been injured and are receiving treatment at various hospitals in the vicinity. The scene of the accident has been closed off as rescue efforts continue to free people trapped in their vehicles and to allow investigators to collect evidence into the causes of the accident.
