Addressing Parliament on Friday ahead of a confidence vote in the government, Deputy Finance Minister Giorgos Mavraganis heralded the continued lowering of tax rates, saying the government intended to broaden tax relief “in a programmed and decisive way.”

The authorities are in a position to offer the relief, he said, following achievements in fiscal adjustment that he attributed to the sacrifices of the Greek people. He added that the government remained focused on cracking down on tax evaders. “The government has demonstrated its consistent commitment to curbing tax evasion unlike the opposition which did not support any of its interventions in Parliament,” Mavraganis said, referring to SYRIZA.

Mavraganis also emphasized the importance of preserving stability as the Greek economy begins to stabilize.

Alternate Finance Minister Christos Staikouras struck a similar tone, saying there was a “national, urgent need to safeguard everything that has been won with great effort and thanks to the sacrifices of the Greek people.”
