Ethnic Greeks killed in southeastern Ukraine shelling attack

The Greek Foreign Ministry confirmed Wednesday that ethnic Greeks were among those killed during the shelling of Sartana, near the city of Mariupol in southeastern Ukraine. The ministry did not say how many ethnic Greeks lost their lives. It is thought that at least seven people were killed during Tuesday night’s shelling.

“I express my deep and honest condolences to the families of the victims,” said Foreign Minister Evangelos Venizelos in a statement. “Our support will be immediate.”

He added that the Greek Consulate in Mariupol has been instructed to “extend every possible support” to the victims’ families. Greece only reopened its consulate in Mariupol this week. It was moved to Dnepropetrovsk in August due to fighting in the area between Ukrainian forces and Russian separatists.
