A bid by the rector of Athens University, Theodoros Fortsakis, to ensure that only registered students or teaching staff are allowed access to the grounds of the institution prompted protests outside the university’s administrative headquarters on central Panepistimiou Street Thursday, with crowds of angry students clashing with riot police.

Meanwhile, in solidarity, students staged a sit-in at the campuses of Athens Law School and Athens University’s mathematics faculty.

The initiative is a bid to boost security in the wake of a spate of recent incidents at Greek universities that suggest campuses are being used to harbor criminals groups.
