The Council of State has ordered up to 900 illegally erected buildings on the shores of the Mesolongi Lagoon in western Greece to be knocked down but the process could take years, Kathimerini understands.

Local authorities have asked the central government to act following the court ruling but the regional administration, which is responsible for such action, will have to launch three tenders for the demolition to take place.

“We have waited many years to see court rulings implemented but so far we have not seen any buildings demolished,” said Napoleon Papadatos, the head of a local environmental group. “We have waited 5-6 years for the Council of State ruling but we do not know how long it will take the state to carry it out.”
