Two British tourists die in Cyprus despite sea rescue bid

A British man and woman died at a Cypriot tourist resort Tuesday despite him dragging her to shore in a bid to save her from drowning, police said.

The man responded to the woman's calls for help after she ran into trouble while taking an afternoon swim in the western port of Paphos, one of the Mediterranean island's main tourist attractions.

Police said the 63-year-old man was able to bring her to shore, but lost consciousness himself soon after administering first aid to her.

The 64-year-old woman was taken to a Paphos clinic but was pronounced dead on arrival.

A post mortem would be carried out on Wednesday to ascertain the cause of death of both Britons, whose identities have yet to be announced.

Paphos is notorious for its strong currents and there are several drownings in the coastal resort every year despite efforts by the authorities to warn swimmers of the dangers.
