The government’s intention of turning Domokos jail in central Greece into a high-security facility within 100 days was announced on January 7 by Justice Minister Haralambos Athanasiou. The plan was unveiled in the wake of the news that November 17 terrorist Christodoulos Xeros had disappeared while on furlough.
In July, Parliament passed legislation allowing the creation of maximum-security jails. The transfer of prisoners to Domokos followed but no work has taken place at the prison to step up security.
One guard who spoke to Kathimerini on condition of anonymity said that prison staff are even carrying out basic maintenance themselves.
